Seagate SATA drive from hell!
I have an AS8 mobo with p4 3.0G cpu... I just installed a new 160G Seagate Sata drive... Here is the issue. On the first boot the Bio saw the drive.... So I ran diskwiz and installed it/copied files to it.... Now when I boot it is like the drive is not even there. The drive does not spin nor does the bios see it. What the hell is going on? I have not changed anything and the drive worked 1 time and now it does not. I have dled the latest drivers from abit and they still do not work... Why did the bios see it on the first boot but once I installed and copied files to it does it not see it anymore?
Thanks Last edited by thehitman; 12-06-2005 at 04:26 PM. |

Please clarify a couple of things: Is diskwiz what you used to partition and format? Did you download the Sata drivers to a floppy? If you did download them, where did you download them from? The following two are if you did load an OS on this disk: When you loaded the OS (I am assuming that is what you meant), did you tap F6 when the disk asked for other drivers? Did you load those drivers when it stopped and asked for them? When you said you "copied files to it", exactly what did you copy to it? Exactly what did that disk have on it that you copied? Is this drive replacing a Sata or an IDE drive? Are you sure you have the BIOS for this drive set to AUTO? Is the drive enabled in the BIOS setup menu. (some boards require that you enable a particular Sata port...I don't know your board so don't know if this is an issue...) Some boards have separate Sata and Sata Raid connectors, are you sure you have them hooked up in the regular Sata area and not the raid area? I know, these are simple questions, but I have forgotten some little small thing so many times, I can't remember all of them. I am just doing a check to make sure and get information.

Basically I did a text book install from seagates users manual. I installed the drive with all of their utilities.... I did a clone disk of my current setup with windows XP. Diskwiz is what I used to part/format the drive. I dled the mobo drivers from their site and installed them in XP. I guess my main question is why isn't the drive spinning up? I also assume the bios does not see it because of that. My first boot with the fresh drive was fine the bios saw it and had the correct volume 160G. Then once I used diskwiz to partition/format and clone my EIDE drive the SATA drive no longer works.
![]() My question is what happened to the drive once it was partitioned/formatted and "installed" and why was it fine on the first boot? Last edited by thehitman; 12-06-2005 at 06:28 PM. |

I have no idea, so am just throwing out things to see if we missed something and to understand exactly how you set it up. Have you taken a close look at the ribbon cable and power connector to the Sata? They are noted for coming loose on Sata drives and some even sell a clamp to keep them on. I know mine can come loose pretty easily. I will keep searching for an answer on this one. This case is rather unusual since it worked and then quit. Replying will also get it back up to the top of the board so others can take a look and might have other ideas. Oh, are you certain that your boot order is correct and has the Sata is in the boot order? Also, do you have any IDE drives on this unit presently hooked up. If you do, take that drive out and try it. Another one, which drive is now the C: drive? Keep us posted of any changes.

Here we go. If I hold the power cable in the drive spins up and is seen by the BIOS on Channel 3 Master. So the drive being seen and spinning is not a problem anylonger. I now get this error when it tries to load Windows XP "Windows can not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem, could not read from the selected boot disk, check boot path and disk hardware, please check the windows documentation about hardware disk configuration in your hardware ref manual"
Also the drive is seen at ATA100 not 150.... |

Well when it reported back that it was ATA100 there was no other drive in the computer except the SATA drive. For some reason I checked in windows and the SATA drive was 28G where as the drive I cloned is 32G's so I am going to reformat it and clone again.... I will let you know what happenes. :)
Thanks |

Can anyone suggest an addapter for the power? The one that came with the Seagate drive has to be the biggest piece of **** I have ever seen. I had to tape it onto the drive. Please tell me there is a better way....
