hard drive not found

On my brother's laptop when he starts it up he gets an error that reads

Primary hard disk drive 0 not found

No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

Its a Dell Inspiron 8000 that runs windows xp. How do you fix this problem?

Thanks,

Charlie

Charlie:

go into the bios and check to be sure the hard drive gets recognised by the bios / when looking around in the bios you should be able to review the hard drives on the system as well as the boot order / make sure the boot order is preoperly set floppy / hard drive / cd-rom

regards

Well I got it to boot running in safe mode, is their anything I can check/fix while in safe mode to get the computer to boot properly. Also I can hear the harddrive making clicking sounds, which sounds like it is struggling to operate.

Thanks

I would boot the computer using the win cd and enter the recovery console / then run chkdisk on the drive ]

here is a complete "how to" (look for chkdsk section)
