10000 and 15000RPM HD

I do video editing and I'm planning on buying a new hard drive for more room but I'm thinking of buying two HD's if this makes a difference. I currently have 160GB HD which I run out of room awfuly quick. What I'm thinking of doing is buying a super fast HD for my programs and windows. So this HD would be 36.7GB. Than I'd buy probably a 400GB HD at 7200RPM's to add to my 160GBHD for all my video and everything else.
What I need to know is, is this a good idea or will I just be waisting money. Thanks for the feedback.

thats an excellent idea ~~ the fast drive could be a 10,000 rpm western digital raptor and the other a 400 gig ide drive you wont get 15,000 rpm drives unless youre into top shelf scsi drives and that means big $$$$$$$$

youre current plan is a top shelf idea / procedd and enjoy !!

regards

joe

IT would be cool to get a couple of Raptors in a striped array for your OS and programs.

Update

Here is an update on what I'm planning on getting, hopefully before Christmas...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822141140
I'd love to be able to get two of these things and do what crazijoe suggested but that is to much money right now.
What I like about this HD is it is an 80pinHD and it has a 16MB cache. I don't know to much about the different brands I know Seagate makes a good HD, which is what I'm using now, but the Seagate Cheetah is more expensive and is only a 68pin drive.
So let me know what you think about Hitachi HD's.

You do realize that the drive you have listed is a SCSI drive. You will need to get an appropriate SCSI controller card. A SCSI card that will get you the speeds you want may cost you about $100.00. Plus you are limited to the bandwidth of the PCI bus.

as crazy joe has stated / to use scsi drives you will need a scsi controller card / look for ADAPTEC 29160N

but IMO the scsi drives even though they are on the PCI bus are quite a bit faster than any SATA drive / when the SATA drives advertising talk of their speeds they are generally talking burst speed (doesnt last long like the name implies) scsi's dont burst they maintain their transfer speeds. I have never seen a drive yet that could overload the PCI bus yet anyway >>>> unless a raid set-up maybeeeee at the 133mbs rate thats haulin. And with the 15K rotational spinning speed they can write and read data much faster,

joe

update

I have not ordered anything yet and my plans have changed slightly. As much as I would love the 15000 speed HD I do not wish to buy a controller card at this time. So I will be purchasing the Raptor. I will also be getting the the 74GB HD instead of the 36.7GB HD. For a few bucks and a bigger HD I can partition the drive to do a few extra things. Eventually I would like to do what crazijoe suggested and put two raptors in striped array.

Thank you crazyjoe and linderman for all your imput, you've been very helpful.

thanks for the update >>>> you have made a sound & logical decision >>> I think somewhere in the near future when sata drives and sata controllers become as dependantly stable as their SCSI cousins >>> the SCSI world will be replaced by the SATA
