Hi,
I'm having a pretty weird problem with my Maxtor onetouch firewire/USB 160 GB external drive. The drive is around 2 years old, I haven't used it much lately though and it is not even close to being filled. All of a sudden, it has been making very loud whirring or sputtering noises that come in an inconsistant rhythm. Also, the drive is no longer reconigzed by my computer. The little "ba-bing!" sound that the computer makes when a device is plugged in...that noise does not happen when I plug in the drive, it does not show up in "My Computer", and the device manager does not say its plugged in. The little green light in front of the drive is still lit up, though. I've tried replacing the cable, so I know it's not a bad connection. What should I do to get my computer to reconigze the drive? Is there a way of erasing the drive in case there is a corrupt file on it? THANKS ALOT HAROLD |

Well, you might want to go to maxtor's website and check their product support, knowledge base, and warranty, for the drive.
Download Maxtor OneTouch Settings Update .

I've scoured Maxtor's website, nothing seems to help...although this link seemed helpful.
https://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...mjZXMh&p_lva=# So...I went there and began folowing the steps. However, as soon as I clicked "Disk Management" I got a windows error. Now - the "ba-bing!" comes up, my computer reconigzes teh maxtor hardware. However, It still doesnt show up in My Computer as the G drive and I can't do anything with it...it is still making creepy noises and I still can't access "Disk Management" What is going on??? |

Well, usually when a drive starts making noises it never made before it's a sign the drive is failing.
Have you checked Device Manager to see if there are any problems? Also have a look in Event Viewer-System (right click My Computer, Manage).
