External Hard Drive Firewire problem...
Hi,
I have recently purchased an external hard drive (Prolific PL3507 200GB) which is recognised by my system (Win XP Pro) when using the USB connection, but this is too slow and I get I/O errors when trying to playback videos from it etc. Ideally I want to use the Firewire connection, but this doesn't work. At first I thought it wasn't being recognised at all, but when I had a look in Device Manager, it had an exclamation on the icon and its properties say it has been stopped due to errors (code 43). The manual said that XP users must run SP2, which I am now doing, but there's been no change. I have found little on the web to help other than firmware updates, but I don't want to flash anything unless I know its going to help solve the problem. Any ideas? |

*Update*
Sometimes (since installing SP2) the drive is recognised, but within a couple of minutes (especially if I try to put stuff on to it) it is removed from the list of drives on 'My Computer' and in Device Manager it is still listed but has been stopped. Exact message... Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) Can anyone help? |

I've tried the microsoft recommendations - but when I try to troubleshoot through the properties of the device in Device Manager, the Help & Support Center comes up totally blank. I've tried going through the hardware troubleshooter and that was no help.
There is a small leaflet that came with the drive, it says (for firewire) that the device is plug & play, so there's no need for drivers. It does say that XP users should upgrade to SP1, but the problem has been the same before upgrading to SP1, after upgrading to SP1 & after upgrading to SP2. |
