Unformatted Partitions only reading as 1GB

I have 2 partitions which have data on which I cannot loose, one of which is 20GB another is 160GB (the 160 is a separate drive). i recently reformatted my boot drive beause ALL of my partitions were reading as 1GB. my boot drive is perfectly fine now. however i have around 110GB of data which I can't loose nor can i afford a new hard drive to back everythign up.

the thing is. I can still access and use/write to all of the data still. However the drive shows up as 1GB and says that none of the data that is there is using any of the space. I can't format my drive and then use a data recovery tool because i would ahve to restore all the data to a different drive. which as said I can't so..

is there any way i can get my space back on this drive (the 40gb that was free) without having to format the drive.

all help is appreciated
thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum:

Copley:

no one has answered you because your requirements of both lose no data and dont buy another drive leave us no way of helping you !!

I strongly advise you buy a cheap used drive off ebay / like a western digital 40 gig ~~ should run about $15.00 to $25.00 then install the drive on your machine as the primary master / then install windows on this drive
then install your old drive in the computer as a slave & you can then copy over all your important data / after backing-up your data you will need to wipe your old drive with a drive nuker and reformatt as it sounds like the partition table has become corrupt / i wouldnt keep messing with the drive as a full blown crash could happen any time !! you operating now like an airliner with two engines out

I would also suggest a bios update before you install the new drive / put the old drive with data away or unplugged until you have a bios updated and the new drive partitioned and formatted and the OS installed

also you will need to do the slipstream trick to address the 137 gig drive limits of win xp / see this thread

hard drive install...

if you have any questions please ask away / remember you will catch more bees with honey than with vinegar

regards

joe
