does anyone know a free way to block out a slave hard drive?

Sure, m$ has a powertoy called Tweak UI that you can use. After you download and install it (look in Control Panel ) you can click it and select the My Computer(tab), there will be a list of drive letters-just remove checkmark from the one you want to hide. When you want to access it, just put the checkmark beside it again.
