Lacie ext usb HD can't see it...
I have following: Lacie external usb HD (a maxtor drive), and XP Home
Problem I have is XP won't always recognise it as a HD in My Computer. The first time i plugged it in it was shown as a new HD, which I formatted and copied some stuff to it just as a test. But now after restarting, it doesn't show up as a drive in windows explorer. When I plug it into usb port, the drive is added to the Safely Remove Hardware List, so it knows the HD is there. Looking at Computer/Disk management it is not given a drive letter in the list of volumes at the top but is shown as disk5 and unallocated in the list below. (When 1st formatted it was shown as drive M: & formatted). The drive is also in the device manager list, and is running and powered ok. I have restarted a couple of times but to no avail. any help gratefully received. |

I have run into this problem several times with USB cameras and their docking stations
I had success by deleting all references of the hardware (hardware manager) for the usb device and uninstall from the control panel any software you may have loaded for it / unplug the drive / total shutdown the computer twice then download and install service pack 2 (sometimes it takes two complete shutdowns to wake up the bios - thats why i personally dont use restarts or soft boots when installing hardware / also try another cable - bad cables are a common usb problem. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../winxpsp2.mspx regards joe

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager. View, Show Hidden Devices. Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers. Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one. If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well. When this is done, reboot TWICE. Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.
