Computer Running really slow due to hardrives, please help! =).

hi there, i recently put in a slave IDE hardrive and after some trial and error of getting the system to recognizing it and changing jumper settings, i finally got it to recongize both, and it works. but since then my pc has run like half as fast as it normally does, for example, when im playing music it will have fluctuations of the music slowing down and the whole pc freezes for a bit, until it sorts itself out.

is there anything im unaware of that could be causing this?, anything i may have knocked?, loose cable somewhere?....anything??, suggestions and solutions will be HIGHLY appreciated

Thankyou very much in advance,

Darren

My System

Control Panel > System > Device Manager. Click the + next to disk drives and right-click/properties on both hard drives. Under the Settings tab you can enable DMA. Reboot and see if it's still enabled (some drives don't support it)

ive just follow those instructions and under the propeties in the device manager (right clicking on either IDE), it has no settings tab, just " General, Policies, Volumes, Drivers and Details", and none of the following tabs contains a "DMA ENABLING" options. just stuff bout allowing the disk to cache i think. which is selected, so am i doing something wrong?

My System

I cannot find any DMA settings under the Hard Drive properties either. But I do see them in the Primary and Secondary IDE Controllers properties under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section.

Some things to try:

Shut down the PC and unplugging the ribbon cable from the drive you installed and see if the system returns to normal.

If you have 2 IDE channels you could try the new drive as a master on the second channel. If you have a CD ROM on the second channel remove it temporarily.

It could be that this new drive is faulty or your system does not like the combination of those 2 drives on the same channel which brings me to another thought.

Is this drive you installed a new drive or is it an older slower drive? If your system does not support independent device timing the slower drive could hamper performance of the faster drive if it is on the same IDE channel. This is probably not your problem since most modern systems support independent device timing for this very reason, but I thought it worth mentioning.

My System

Send a message via MSN to linderman
Wink

Also pick yurself up some new 80 pin IDE drive cables / good quality ones are cheap ~~ may have a poo poo cable

then run the manufacturers hard drive diagnostic program from their website on each drive to be sure one doesnt have the flu

Barry has a good suggestion ~ try the slave on the secondary ide connector as the secondary Master ???? then check speeds

regards

joe
