I am attemting to install a 2nd physical drive to my win98se com. Problem is that although the new drive is correctly shown in bios, windows doesn't show it at all. I have tried the jumpers in cable select and master/slave with the same results.
Additionally, when i was installing the new drive I discovered that my existing c: drive is 20gb although window shows it at 7. Thus I upgraded my bios which resolved the capacity problem at least on the c: drive. I have not partitioned it as my intent is to use the new drive as the boot drive and the old one as slave/storage. I have tried everything I can think of in windows including a new hardware search but the new drive is not recognized anywhere. Ideas??? |

You can use the Win98 boot floppy or the Win98 CDROM and run Fdisk. After you partition the drive you can install the OS on it with the Win98 CD or you can format it in Windows.

Joe: Let me try one more time.
1. I booted from a floppy as you suggested. I ran fdisk/status and the only drive shown was C:. 2. I ran the maxtor installation software and it says in essence that the only drive I have is the c: or windows drive and thus it won't proceed with a partition and format. 3. I click on my computer and the drives shown are a: c: and e which is my cdrw. 4. under device manager the only drives that appear are 1 hd and the floppy Nowhere, except in the bios does the new drive appear. Bios shows the correct type and shows the c: drive as Primary master and the new drive as primary slave exactly as i set the jumpers. Somehow, someway, something is masking the drive from both windows and msdos. Any thoughts? |

Try removing the power plug from the master drive with OS on it / then reboot see what that does ???
any chance you have jumpers wrong or improper position on the cable / master must go at far end of cable / farthest from the primary IDE mobo cable connector ?? dont format or partition the drive without the master drive being seen / or it will assign C drive to your new suppose to be slave !! but that may wake up the bios and primary ide controller regards joe
