XP "Setup cannot access this disk" error on SATA HD; Stop Errors.

I am attempting to do a fresh install of XP on a fairly new machine. I have two SATA drives, which are not set up in a RAID array. My SATA bios does see the drives, but when I attempt to install XP, even after loading the appropriate 3rd party drivers for the SATA support, XP's setup returns the error: "Setup cannot access this disk".

Occasionally, with no rhyme or reason, XP will see the disks, and I have been able to copy over the installation data. However, on reboot, I receive a stop error: 0x0000007A, after which it dumps the physical memory and stalls. Regarding the stop error, my memory checked out fine, and I've taken out all hardware that I can to attempt to narrow down possible sources of the problem. Any suggestions? Could this be a MBR problem? Thanks!

More system details:
3200 Athlon XP
80 GB HD SATA Western Digital
250 GB HD Maxtor
1.25 GB DDR RAM
AGP Video MSI 128MB

if you have the diagnostics utility that came with the western digital hdd then i recommend booting up with it and scanning the hdd for any errors. good luck and see if your hdd is the problem.
