2nd hard drive
Hi I was hoping that somebody could help me out with a very annoying problem I’m having with my second hard drive which I use mainly for storage and doesn’t have windows on it.
I’ve had it for well over a year without any problems but recently when I would boot up my system, my computer would take a long time to start up and when it did finally load, my hard drive would not show up correctly. It would say ‘Local Disk F’ when it should of said ‘DISK2 F’ when looking at it in my computer, and when I tried to explore the files it wouldn’t load. This proved to not be much of a problem as I would just restart my computer and then the problem would disappear. However, recently this no longer worked no matter how many times I tried rebooting. When I tried to open the files on the hard drive this time it would say the hard drive was not formatted properly, so I recently decided I would reformat it. This worked fine and I began the long task of re-downl… er installing all my music, games, programs, etc. Unfortunately the problem would resurface again and I’m really not sure what I should do to fix it, and I would be really grateful if somebody here could give me some advice. Its a seagate 120gb drive, there no problems with my other hard drive and ive tried checking the disk for errors in windows but that didnt work. Any advice? Thanks |

go to the h/d manufacturers site and d/l their diognostic utility and run it to check the drive
it could also be a loose or faulty eide cable

1st go here and use seatools to check the drive. http://seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html
Post back and let us know what you find. If this does not work, there are other options.

Thanks for advice. This is what it said:-
Run: 08/08/2005 09:26:02 Primary IDE Channel : ST3120026A Model: ST3120026A Serial Number: 3JT33G5S Capacity: 120.03 GB Status: A S.M.A.R.T. threshold was exceeded. Any drive reporting a S.M.A.R.T. error should be considered likely to fail at any time. You should back up your data from any such drive as soon as possible. Contact your computer or hard drive vendor to obtain return information. Is there anything i can do to fix this? Id rather keep my data if possible |
