Recovery Disk won't work All I want to do is format my computer

Please help. I have a Toshiba Satellite M30. I am trying to reinstall everything from scratch. When I put the recovery disk in, I get an error that says "This recovery and application CD is not configured to work with this machine(portable pc) this cd is for: Satellite M30. Please use the correct Recovery and applications cd." Well, I am using the correct cd with the correct computer. Can someone please, please help?

It's telling me that it's the wrong machine when I know it's not I bought it at Harvey Norman brand new and I've used these disks before. Could of my unskilled network administrator played around with some settings like the reason for my modem simply disappearring?? These are just some of the reasons I'm formatting it in the first place. I do have a copy of windows XP PRO but I like some of the programs that came on the installation disks e.g. drag and drop. All the drivers etc.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum:

Systems supplied with a recovery disk (manufactured systems ie dell gateway toshiba) are notorious for suppying "recovery" cd's which translate they are unable to "clean" install an OS I strongly suggest you clean install your OS with a "retail" version of win xp (like your pro version) then hopefully you will be able to extract the programs off the recovery cd that you like ???

Also while formatting / i would advise a hard drive cleaner before you reinstall to make sure none of the old bull crap gets left / just make sure you dont have any drives connected (power connector active) to the computer that you dont want ereased / then use the auto mode

please let us know how you proceed / dont hesitate to ask more questions

regards

If I use that program from the site you suggested first. Then install XP PRO won't I have to download all the drivers etc.?? Will it fix the problem maybe of saying that I don't have a modem when I very well know I do or should I just take it into somewhere and have it fixed? What would you suggest?

Thanks for such a quick reply.

Hello a complete cleaning and "clean" install will make your system run like the day it was new / win xp will load all drivers from its database unless you have some third rate component attached that hasnt been tested by microsoft at which time you would need to get those drivers directly from the componet manufacturers website

Format with WIN XP reset DMI?

Will formatting my machine with WIN XP reset the DMI on my computer? They say that is what I need to do in order for my recovery disks to work.

I'm a bit scared to d'load and use that program. It says it comes with some stuff when you use it. I will give it a go if it will reset the DMI cos that's what needs to be done. As I know I can't get the programs off the recovery disks. It is not possible and I really really like them. So if it formats or resets the DMI I will trust you and give that program a go otherwise I will just try formatting with XP if that resets the DMI.

Confused?

I agree with linderman. Best way is to use the XP pro cd that you have. I wouldnt really suggest to use recovery cd's. On the other hand I see you are very attached to your current configurations and settings. You might also consider fixing the things you are unhappy with. Nothing will give you a better performing computer as a fresh install but i belive there is a solution to your problems. If you consider the fix path please give us a list of your problems and we would seek for fixes.

Jbee, if you want to try to reset DMI, turn the machine on and while it is starting up, press the key combination to go into BIOS Setup. Once in there, look for a option that says something like "Reset configuration" or "Load Optimal settings". One of these should reset the DMI settings - if not post back.
