Welcome to TSF:
if your external is the type which is in a hard drive caddy or enclosure / then I would try removing the drive from the enclosure and connecting it directly to your computer as a slave / this has in many similar circumstances "woke" up the computer at which point you would restore it tot he usb enclosure / could be a bad cable ????? do you have USB hub version 2.0 installed on your motherboard ???? also donwload service pack 2 for win xp or sp-4 for win 2k that has helped several of these problems !! dont hesitate to ask more questions & reply on your progress regards joe

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager. View, Show Hidden Devices. Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers. Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one. If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well. When this is done, reboot TWICE. Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Look in Device Manager and tell us what it has listed for the USB drive, should appear under Disk Drives, or perhaps USB Controllers or Other if it has errors.
