cheers from a first timer!
problem: yesterday i was working in photoshop and jasc paint (trial version) when i tried to access a jpg file. the hard drive churned and churned and churned until i received a message similar to this: disk error 1 - ...this problem is irrepairable. i click on QUIT button and im returned to my work session. i attempt to access another file and get the same response. this time the hard drive won't stop its churning. because i have a slow pc (350mhz - don't laugh, it was free) i figured it was just pulling up the info. but after about five minutes, i tried to access task manager. nada. i try again. nada. so i shut down and reboot. the gateway info screen smiles at me (i don't recall if it beeped its acceptance or not) and then im greeted with by the windows xp screen. the screen goes blank and i position myself to login. however, a considerable portion of my life dissolves when i hear the hard drive doing that same repetitive churning. i wait to see what will happen, but after a few minutes i panic and shut down. i try again. same thing. again. same. i am effectively locked out of my own system because the hard drive keeps going over a sector of the disk. rebooting offers me a chance to login in safe mode, but even thats hampered by the hard drive's search for its missing love or something. this pc isnt online, but i do a lot of pulling files from the net and storing them on this pc. could this sudden death of me be a virus? or software problem? or hard drive screw up? im considering piggy-backing the HD to another pc and running norton on it. smart? please help restore my youth! |
