Having Problems Installing XP on to new Hard Drive

Hi,

I have a HP laptop xt 345 , it had 30 gb hard drive which got fried.
So, I bought a new Hard drive of same size and make , installed it.

But I am unable to install XP on to the new Hard drive.

I can see the new Hard drive in BIOS.

Are there some compatiblity issues ?? or is there something else ???

Please help ???

I am fairly sure that HP & compaq "force" you to get a hard drive from them. Because upon boot up the motherboard is looking for some kinda of priority based code.
