How do I copy applications from HD to HD

I am replacing a flakey SATA 160 Maxtor with a SATA 160 Seagate. After I've formatted and installed XPpro on the new Seagate, is there an program that will copy selected applications from the old hard drive as a slave to the new drive. I want to avoid having to reinstall the games and other things my son has on there. The tech from the computer company said there's a Microsoft program that would copy the applications to the new drive but I don't find any such program on the Microsoft website.

How can I do this...?

Not all programs and data

That discussion is about cloning the HD.

I do not want to clone the HD. I just want to copy certain programs. Is that possible?

I had seen a program long ago at compusa to transfer from computer to computer when one buys a new computer and I thought it indicated that you could select which applications get transferred. Was it called "Overdrive"?

Copy/paste applications?

You can't copy and paste applications like Joint Operations (game) and FLight Simulator from a slave drive to a primary drive, can you?

The toughest part of upgrading to a newer hard drive is the task of transferring all of your files and configurations over to the new drive. Yes, you can re-install Windows, re-install all of your programs, re-download all of your shareware, copy over all of your documents, then try to reconfigure it to the way you like it. But, why? There are much easier ways.

I should mention here that transferring your files to a new system configuration is not always a good idea. Windows 2000 and XP, for example, are quite particular about the hardware it is being run on. Swapping out a motherboard on these systems usually requires a re-install of the operating system, although there are ways around this. nonetheless, if there are drastic differences between the source configration and the target configuration, it might be a better idea to perforn a full re-installation and start fresh. If you are only transferring from one drive to another in the same system, then this message is not for you.

That said, I will outline how to do a direct file transfer from drive to drive.
To be continued at http://www.pcmech.com/show/harddrive/52/

PS. I tried to find the program you was speaking about but i couldn't

You cannot just copy programs from one drive to another - the files in /Program Files/ are only part of the equation ... there are files spread throughout the Windows hierarchy, as well as registry entries (a ton) for each app.

Either clone the drive in its entirety, or install clean and install the apps one at a time.
