HD problem

ok, I got a old PC circa 1999 from a friend, everything on it worked fine until i tried to install a cd drive in it (it didint come with one) Now its just ignoring any hardrives I put in it, I tried removing the cd drive but it still won't read any hardrives. is it possible that the cd-rom messed some bios settings, any help would be very much appreciated.

Check and make sure your jumpers are configured correctly. (Master / Slave)

Does Auto-Detect find anything? www.d-a-l.com/auto-detect.php
If the HD isn't showing up in BIOS, check it's connected properly to the PSU and motherboard or try another ribbon cable.

I would try the drive in a different machine. Either the drive is bad or the controller is bad.

i removed the battery and put it backin, so now i have windows back up with the cd-rom drive working. the only problem now is that it says that the harddrive is a secondary master, is that going to be a problem or can I just leave it like that?

That shouldn't be a problem. If you want to change it just swap the primary IDE cable and the secondary IDE cables around on the MB.

If you've only got 1 hard drive and 1 CD, put the HD on IDE-0 as master and the CD on IDE-1 as master. Both on IDE-0 as master and slave could slow things down.
edit: sorry crazijoe, you beat me to it
