Is my hard drive done?

Hi guys,
i was on the pc and it just froze, restart it and the hard drive is not detected anymore.
I tried the hard drive in another pc with a different cable and same result, hard drive not detected and it freezes my pc.
I tried it in an external usb enclosure and it comes up as a USB Mass Storage Device with the yellow exclamation point on it and the message"This device cannot start(code 10).

So my question,is the hard drive done?

Thank you!

Re: Is my hard drive done?

A yellow exclamation mark means that device manager in windows has detected an issue with that device. It could mean that the drivers for the hard drive are not upto date or that the cables are faulty or that it is dying.

download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturers website and it will tell you if there is an issue with it and it could fix it. Also try new cables too.

I tried with new cable, same result.
diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer does not work since hard drive is not detected.

Re: Is my hard drive done?

check all jumper settings and that the drive is selected for auto detect in the bios, you could also try the drive in another port (if it's SATA) or channel on the IDE cable.

if none of this works then it looks like it could be an issue with the motherboard. Try the drive in another system if you can.

Can you feel the drive spin up? Does it making any clicking or grinding noises?

Re: Is my hard drive done?

Do not try to spin up the drive, sounds like a head crash or spindle failure if it is grinding. Continuing to spin it up could amake the data unrecoverable. Does it sound like anything here http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?

I think this one sums it up best:
Seagate desktop drive with seized spindle trying to spin up.

Re: Is my hard drive done?

At this point then, if that is the sound, this will require pro recovery. Probably looking at something in the neighborhood of $1200 - $2000. This will require moving the platters to a compatible donor drive with a good spindle/motor combo. What is the capacity/ manufacturer and size of the drive?

I don't want to recover anything(everything is on backup),I already bought a new drive and reinstalled windows.
The drive is a seagate barracuda 320gb.

Re: Is my hard drive done?

Well then the best thing to do is run a drill bit through the drive into the platters and throw it in the bin.
