Maxtor hd- choppy performances

Hi all.

I had a Maxtor 6Y060L0 (60 gb) were Ive all the system files, XP sp2 included.

Recently I (my uncle, pc expert) addeded a new one, a Maxtor 6Y080L0.

On this new hd I store music, videos and games.

however, OFTEN, whenever I load something from it, the hd stops loading, the hd light freezes in silence as well as the whole system.

Then after some seconds (4-5, sometimes whole minutes!!) it works again (sometimes it totally crashed, but that was rare).

This makes all my installations and file tranfering extremely long...

Any ideas? Keep in mind that Im no hardware expert (and not that much in software too!! )

Hi,

If you have anything on that drive, you better back it up quickly. If it is getting "stuck" while reading or writing, it probably is going to be DOA real soon. Also, if it is new, go ahead and RMA it while you have a warranty. Maxtor drives lately (newer ones) are having a real problem with quality control.

Hi,

Although one can never be sure about that, I would try another drive in there to be sure. However, what it sounds like is that the arms that "float" over the disk to retreive data are actually rubbing the disk hard enough to stop the disk from spinning properly. Just an opinion. However, if that is the case, it won't be lonnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggggggggg!

Maybe someone else will give an opinion on this and I hope they do. Just my experience that when any hard disk displays abnormal behavior, better back up quickly if you have something you want on there.

Hi,

I am not sure what you mean by having trouble transferring. If you think that drive is going bad (you can hear it, I can't), then until you get a plan to transfer what you want, I would just unplug the power from it and take the ribbon cable off. That way, It won't be running until you are ready for it.
