Bios and XP see HD but not accessible???

Hi there...newbie with a BIG problem.

Came home and found my PC continuously rebooting right after posting. Ran XP recovery console and ran bootcfg /list. It said: currently no boot entries available to display. Ran bootcfg /rebuild and it said:
Erorr: Failed to successfully scan disks for windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrupted file system, which would prevent bootcfg from successfully scanning. Use chkdsk to detect andy disk errors.

chkdsk said:
The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.

Installed in another XP Pro machine as a slave. Bios and XP recognize the drive but in XP it shows no total size/free space under My Computer but shows a healthy basic 40 gig HD in disk Mgt. If I click on the drive in My Computer, it says: file or directory corrupted or unreadable.

Tried (paid for) Active Partition Recovery. It showed all my data but it didn't find a bad partition. Used demo of Stellar Phoenix and it showed all my data but no partitions bad.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

If you can, copy all your data off that disk immediately.

Go into the BIOS and set the disks to Auto detect and reboot to see if it is detected.

You don't say how large the disk is or how old it is. This information would help.

Thanks for responding.
It's a 40 gig Quantum Fireball that is a few years old. I've never had a problem with the drive since buying and installing it. The bios recognized the disk as what it is. XP recognizes the drive under My Computer as the slave but it shows no values (i.e. no total size or free space). Disk Mgt shows a healthy, basic 37.2 drive. When I try to access the drive, I get an error of: "files or directory corrupted or unreadable" so I can't get to the data. With Active Partition Recovery and Stellar Phoenix I can see all my data but these programs don't show a partition to fix. I considered running fixboot and/or fixmbr from recovery console but was afraid it would destroy the data. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
