external hard drive reads "malfunction"

My Iomega 1T external hard drive reads "malfunction" when I plug it into the USB port on my laptop. I am running Windows XP. The hard drive does not make any weird clicking noises, the light turns on (not immediately though), it worked just the day before I received the message. I did not drop the hard drive and there is no physical damage on the hard drive.
Please help me. I am not tech savvy so please use simple terminology if and when responding.

Grateful for any help

Sounds like the drive has failed. Test the drive on another PC to verify.
