Best Ext HDD From this list...
Hiya, I have posted a post similar to this one, but that was a different type of question.. I am definately going to get an External HDD.. but im not too sure which...
Okay, this looks like the one I will be most likely to get.. and here are the prices... I was thinking of the 80GB one. Is this price around average? However, as i was writing this message, I came across this amazing page I know it might be asking alot, but could you just take a brief look around? I am after a lot of space (for long term backup and just dumping my entire computer onto it) for a cheaper price. The Maxtor OneTouch II half way down caught my eye, the same as the Black one at the top did too.... A little guidance on what to get would be helpful :) Im pretty sure I will end up getting the Desktop one for now, because I am not going to be using it on the move much (its all to do with when i join the RAF i will have a laptop and will want my External HDD there because it will contain everything). Im most likely to get a desktop one because I can put my life on it (because i can afford to get bigger space) and it will be my main one. Then a portable one, (like a small 30GB one or something) for photos and essential files... But im still looking on some guidance. That website (the amazing one) i piosted above looks like the cheapest i will be able to get them (because i am from the UK) Thanks again Thanks guys

If it were me, I would not get an external hard drive. I would get an internal hard drive and get an enclosure to put it in. It's probably cheaper, and it gives you more flexibility. For example, you can change the hard drive if you wish a larger one. Or, like I'm doing, I'm using hard drives from my older computers.
... just my opinion. |

Oh?
Well, they do all that on the website too... how safe and easy is it to do this? But it wont have that "one touch" thing that everyone is going on about will it? (what exactly is the one touch thing?) Just to add: I have been looking through, and it often doesnt come cheaper... that website doesnt do the internal hard drives, only external ones (i think, from what I can see by looking through the products). So Yeah, getting an external one will be about the same price, and i dont have any other machines with hard drives worth putting in it (i only have one other computer, and that is being used). So, which out of those external ones do you think is best? I was thinking either the black one or the other one i said above in my first post?

Anyone?
Im sorry to sound like im being pushy However, I think i have made a decision... At the moment, my computer has only used 40GB of space. That is full of idle files i never use, and other useless crap as well as over a couple of GB backup of my parents computer. My budget is £100, So instead of buying a HDD (160GB) that needs a power supply and is a bit big to carry around, I could carry a small 60GB one, with my essential install files, music, videos and whatever else on there... Earlier i was advised to get an enclosure and buy a 2.5" laptop HDD... Is this easy to do? and will it cause many problems on the hard drive? Also, will I be able to do it for much cheaper than here for £92.98 ? It is the 60GB one. Thanks for your time again

You should get whatever you think is best for your needs; that's not for me to say. I only wanted you to be aware of another option.
Here in the U.S., it is generally cheaper to get the enclosure and put an internal HDD in it; and I like the flexibility I noted before. Yes, you do not get that "one-touch" button -- I think that is for making automatic backups onto your external HDD. That is not a need I have, because I have a different backup system. |

Well, i have taken your advice.
And i can get a bigger space, and a nicer looking Enclosure for less than the other one... I only had to open my eyes :) I have found this hard drive, 80GB (the other portable one is only 60GB) and a nice looking case too. And it comes to about £5 less than the other 60GB for 20GB more space... I know that HDD is 7200RPM etc, but i dont work for Pixar and so wont need to super fast access times etc..
