OS: windows xp sp3

tried to install WD My Book Essential 1 tera

my xp is sp3 (i previously had sp2 n lately upgrade to sp3). yesterday when i tried to install WD My Book Essential 1 tera, i noticed my plug n play not working. i also tried to install my ipod (it used to work before) it says driver not found. i'm sure my laptop has the latest update. i tried reekol method (uninstall universal usb driver and restart twice) still not successfull. after the first restart, the found new hardware pop up (the universal driver) and when i tried to install, again it say no driver install. btw, i did not upgrade to the latest IE8 (currently i'm using IE5 and have error. i did not upgrade so because i'm using firefox). could this cause the plug n play not working?
