Hard drive question

I have a 150 gig sata hard drive that i recently installed because i had to 2 pata drives previously when i had to rebuild my computer a couple years back do to motherboard failure, i rebuilt but didnt want to throw anything out that was still usable so i salvaged my optical drive witch recently failed, my ide converter and the 3 pata drives, story in short here the slave drive was a 120 gig and had been reformated like 3 times in its 7 year life span at one point in time i had so much data on it that it wouldnt let me defrag so i began putting **** on to data. the drive was running fine with like only 35% of the space used on it and gave me no issues for a while. Now recently i tried to download a few things on it and it crashed. Its no good know. I do understand that it was a old and i hope it does r i p
My question is whats the average life span of a sata drive and how much can i fill my 150 gig without having issues and having to buy another and transfer data.

You should be able to look up the drive on the manufacturers webpage and they will list the average time between failures, which is typically in the thousands of hours. That will give you the average lifespan. In any case, it is typically years. The amount of data isn't a concern. I'd be more concerned with heat.

Just ensure you have a backup of any important data, and use the HDD however you want or need.

You cannot fil any hd completely without issues, general rule of thumb is leave 15% free space for system and temp file use.
