Greetings.

Apparently my Maxtor hard drive has bad sectors on it, hence it's causing me a lot of problems.

I have a back-up of most of the data. Nonetheless, I would like to know if there's a way to stabilize the drive itself for a limited amount of time (until I'm ready to buy myself a new one).

Best solution since you have a backup is to zero-wipe the drive with killdisk or d-ban, reformat and restore your backup. Alternatively, to keep the data intact you can try MHDD dowload from http://www.hddguru.com and use the Sacn - remap options. This is a non destructive remapping. The drive will only remap bad sectors during a write operation, which is why the zero wipe and restore is the best option to remap bad sectors to the drives good spare sectors. an excessive amount of bad sectors however could fill the g-list and cause the drive to fail. Both are a temporary solution, and depending on the cause of the bads, could be very temporary.
