SATA boot drive no longer detected

Hi, just tried to boot up my pc and it seems that the hdd is no longer being detected, refuses to boot off of it and when in the BIOS it's no longer showing up as a device. Not had any indication of failure, no corruption, errors or the like. Even ran a full checkdisk on it a few days ago with no errors returned.

Tried reseating the power/data cables and switched it to the second port with no luck. The drive access led is on solid constantly while attempting to boot up.

Drive causing the trouble is a Seagate Barracuda running on an Asus P5KPL/c-1600.

Luckily everything's freshly backed up on an external hdd due to recent fresh Win7 installation, but would rather not have to scrap my Barracuda and have to transfer everything all over again.

Re: SATA boot drive no longer detected

What is the model number of the drive. If it is a 7200.11 series drive, there is a known firmware bug. Seagate has a tool on their support site to enter the drive serial number and see if it is potentially affected. If it is, contact Seagate support and tell them you have a drive with potentially affected firmware.

It is the 7200.11, seems really weird that it would just suddenly flip out one day, but I'll have a look, thanks.

Re: SATA boot drive no longer detected

Reading the problems other people have had it seems pretty likely that it's the BSY error, found the firmware update, I'll burn it as an iso and see if it helps out, thanks again. Nice to know I'll not have to spend another few hours setting everything up after just a week.
Think I'll try a different manufacturer next time, both of my Seagate hdd's have caused me problems now .

Re: SATA boot drive no longer detected

If you have the BSY error, you won't be able to apply the firmware update since the drive sounds like i is already bricked and can't be found. There is a way connecting to the drive with a serial port connection that you can get it to reset to take the update, but Seagate has been fixing the drives if the error is firmware related and returning the data intact on the disk.

Re: SATA boot drive no longer detected

Oops, you're right, forgetting that it would actually need to still be detected to use the iso...

Tried talking to Seagate and so far they're being a bunch of completely useless w**kers and pretty much said that the BSY error has nothing to do with anything, we deny all responsibility and it'll cost you if you want data recovery.
Well at least it's still in warranty I suppose.
