New hard drive

Hi im not really smart with computers and someone has told me my Compaq R4000 hard drive is knackered and to get a new one so i pulled it out and had a look on the interweb and all the 2.5 inch pata 40gb hard drives ive found say cache:Min 2Mb Max 12MB but on the spec i see on the internet it says my cache is 128kb so where can i get a new hard drive for pretty cheap?
Can i buy one of these that say Min cache 2mb and it will work?
How do i know if the connector is right

Re: New hard drive

Hi and welcome!

Your laptop will run any of the ATA-5 or ATA-6 hard disk drives that are still sold. According to the specifications for your laptop it will support up to 100GB.

A direct replacement drive exactly like the 40GB you had installed (except refurbished) can be purchased online here: (not recommended)

http://www.getpartsonline.com/40gbhd-pres-r4000.html

However, you can also purchase a new one with a full warranty at a better price at NEWEGG.COM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=&srchInDesc=

Thank you very much!

Re: New hard drive

Hi!

I didn't realize you were outside the USA. Those were just examples and you can check in your own country for a retailer or seller for an ATA-5 or ATA-6 drive (also known as IDE). This would save you the expense of shipping overseas.

A good idea would be to pick one of the drive models on NEWEGG.COM and do a search for that drive model at one of the local vendors or contact them to find out if they have one in stock.

Thanks and have a great day!

Re: New hard drive

Hi!

The connectors on the page that I provided are all the same. They are IDE (ATA-6) drives.

Thanks!

Re: New hard drive

Hi and thanks for the update.

Yes, you do have to plug it in, but since this was your main drive that is faulty, you will have to use your system restore disc that came with the computer or that you created when you first received the system.

Thanks!
