Hey everyone,
I did a reformat of my HP laptop running WinXP SP3 Media Center; and my Seagate 1.5tb external HDD works fine plug-and-play, but the SimpleTech 500gb isn't recognized. I have... - Uninstalled all USB drivers / restarted (three times) - Visited Microsoft Update (no updates or patches needed) - Installed SP3 Everything else seems to be functioning fine. The hard drive is BRAND new (only a month old) and before the reformat worked perfectly, started up with the computer and powered off with the computer. The light still comes on when I plus in the USB cord, but nothing populates in My Computer or comes up as "Auto-play" ANY THOUGHTS??? thanks! :) |

Re: SimpleTech external HDD isn't recognized by WinXP
Is the drive shown in my computer? What does it do if you double click the drive? Does it show in disk management and if so what does it show for a file system?

This happened once before with the same hard drive when I first got it and did a reformat, but it fixed itself after I applied XP updates and restarted. Thanks :) |

Re: SimpleTech external HDD isn't recognized by WinXP
Still isn't working... I did another factory complete reset (Destructive Recovery on HP's E partition) a few nights ago (I have it down to a couple hours now, lol) and although when I plugged the hard-drive in, the light came on and it began to 'spin' as usual, AND the laptop recognized it and said "You new hardware is installed but may not work properly" message on the screen, even after restarting the laptop it would not register in my computer.
I then spent hours installing every last Windows XP update, and still.... nothing. My Seagate External HDD immediately populates... BUT I HAVE A THEORY (which might not be close to correct, haha). Seagate has an icon in the main folder named "Autoplay," which I think allows it to be swappable and plug-and-play, whereas perhaps that feature was deleted from my SimpleTECH Hitachi hard drive. ??? |

Re: SimpleTech external HDD isn't recognized by WinXP
:( I truly think the hard drive is still functioning correctly, something is just getting lost in the connection for some reason (although my Seagate 1.5tb drive works)
Is there any troubleshooting or testing steps I can take? THANKS |
