How to Connect SCSI Ultra3 to PC
Hello Guys, I need some help connecting SCSI hard disks to my workstation pc.
I don’t know hardly anything about SCSI’s, so some clear simple guide will be really helpful. I have got 4 of these SCSI hard disks. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is my motherboard ![]() But funny thing I don’t even know how many PIN connector this is, that’s why I took some pictures of it. My motherboard Asus P5W DH DELUXE (I have 1 spare PCI-Express slot and 1 spare PCI slot) Case Antec Server Case I do know that I will need a SCSI adaptor, but don’t know which one to get. Will I need any additional components apart from a SCSI adaptor? Would really appreciate if anyone can help me getting my SCSI hard disk set up. Thank you Last edited by shahed26; 11-01-2009 at 09:43 AM. |

Re: How to Connect SCSI Ultra3 to PC
You will need an ultra3 scsi adapter and cable with enough ports for your drives. the cable should be self terminating, so all you would need to do is set the address using the addr jumpers. This is a binary jumper, and you want to probably use addreses 2,3,4,5. (either 0 or 7 isiusually used by the host controller card. ) The addr jumpers are binary values, so pin so you can see the values on the label, so to get five you would jumper the pins valued 4 and 1, 3 would be 2 and 1 and so forth 6 would be 4 and 2 and so forth....
here is a pretty good explanation in general terms, http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/scsi/cables.htm best thing at this point is to deal with a vendor like CDW or Insight where you can call and talk to a sales rep, and tell them specifically what you need, rather than trying to order blind off the web. You could tell them what drives you are connecting etc.

Re: How to Connect SCSI Ultra3 to PC
Ok thanks for your reply. Let me make myself more clearer here.
I have got 4 of these hard disks, and want to use them as a RAID0 (am not sure whether i can do that or not with SCSI, if not then any other ways i can combine all the 4 hdds to act as 1 scsi drive?) And lastly am going to be getting 7-8 more SCSI hdds 10k rpm 146gb LVD, and going use as a CHAIN connection. I read in other forums, that to get it up and running you only need a SCSI adaptor PCI-E for best performance and 80 pin to 68 pin convertor? I can get the cables for it later once i figured out which components i will need. Thank you Last edited by shahed26; 11-01-2009 at 10:32 AM. |

Re: How to Connect SCSI Ultra3 to PC
You will need a cable, otherwise how will you connect the drives :) - the convertors would go on the cable to adapt the backplane connectors on these drives most likely, also you will need a power supply that can drive that number of drives, and that has enough power connectors. Configuring as RAID will depend on the controller, or you can use Windows to configure a software raid, tho in the software configuration you still need another drive to boot from.

Re: How to Connect SCSI Ultra3 to PC
This is the card am planning to get, and it also comes with LVD cable.
What do you think of this one? http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/scsi/u320/ASC-29320LPE/ Raptor_pa thank you for all your help you have provided so far. Am starting to understand things a bit better now after googling and stuffs. lol Edit: btw i do have a 750 watts thermotake PSU. am sure its enough to handle maximum 7-8 hdds. I also dont use SLI/CROSSFIRE config, which should help. Last edited by shahed26; 11-01-2009 at 11:11 AM. |

Re: How to Connect SCSI Ultra3 to PC
I'd be surprised if it didn't support raid0 but on that link I didn't see any thing about raid levels supported. Also you understand on raid 0 there is no redundancy, lose one drive and all data is gone?
