Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
Hello guys:
A year ago a WD IDE HDD failed after just 10 months of use. Now another WDD SATA HDD which I have been using for just 4 months is dying as well !! SMART utility is showing that error again. Anyone has had this experience? Is it only bad luck or why could this be happening? Motherboard, memory, PSU and microprocessor are fairly new. Thanks |

Re: Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
That sounds like an actual diagnostic test rather than a SMART result. Download HDDScan from www.hddguru.com and see what it reports for the smart valuse so we can see what the actual failure is. The 07 error could be either a failed head/[preamp, failed read channel or actual surface damage.

Re: Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
Those errors were reported by Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic utility.
HDDscan reports: Self-Test execution status:error when read element failed HDDScan S.M.A.R.T. Report: I get a yellow triangle with an admiration mark in "197 Current Pending Sector Count" Value:200 Worst:200 My second 80GB seagate IDE HDD reports: Self-Test execution status:completed without error or never started I get 2 yellow triangles with an admiration mark in "005 Reallocation Sector Count" Value:100 Worst:100 and "196 Reallocation Event Count" Value:100 Worst:100 Do you know what they mean? Thanks Thanks |

Re: Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
Indicators of bad sectors. All drives ship from the factory with bad sectors, at the time the drive is setup at the factory, these bad sectors are marked in the p-list - permanent bad sector list, and remapped to spare sectors. During use it is normal for additional bad sectors to develop. Some from surface problems on the platters, some from heads getting weak during their life. When the disk writes data to a secotr, it then verifies the data it wrote. If this verification fails, then the disk will add that sector to the g-list - grown defect list- and remap that sector to a spare. This remapping only occurs on write operations. SMART tracks these errors as they can be a good indication of impending failure when they grow too quickly, and the g-list has a fixed amount of space, and there are a limited number of spares.
The errors could be caused by other issues, power supply problems are a real common cause.

Yes both hard drives are on the same PC.
Here's the hardware profile: Motherboard:Foxconn G31MV-K Processor:Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20 GHz RAM Memory:2GB PSU unit specifications: Axix model LC-B450ATX Input 115V-230V, 10A-6A,50Hz-60Hz 1 HP IDE DVD writer 1 HP IDE CD Writer 1 80GB Seagate IDE HDD 1 500GB WD SATA HDD 1 Floppy Drive 1 HP PSC2175 All in One printer 1 Cambridge Soundworks speakers 1 Logitech QuickCam Messenger 1 2Wire 2701HG-T router 1 Manhattan Ultra ATA/133 Controller PCI Card which has both HP drivers attached. Re: Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
Check in the BIOS setup for the voltages and post the voltages reported from there. Also temps as high temps can cause some issues with disk surfaces. Also you can try MHDD also from hddguru.com and use the scan - remap feature to remap bad secotrs. there is also the scan - rerase delays command. Remap is safe for your data erase delays is data destructive but more efficient at remapping bad blocks.

Re: Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
BIOS PC Health System Status:
CPUCore 1.31V +3.3V 3.36V +5V 5.02V +12V 12.16V VDDR 1.87V CPU temperature 44oC System Temperature 39oC CPU Fan Speed 1854RPM System Fan Speed 0RPM PWM Start temperature 35 Start PWM Value 64 Stop PWM Value 2 Delta Temperature 2 Regarding the remapping it may be a good idea at the moment but if I don't replace the HDD or find out why is this happening sooner or later the bad sectors number is going to increase. What do you think? Thanks |

Re: Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
Another thing that I forgot to mention is that my PC is unable to go into hibernation mode.
I get an error message that the WD HDD is preventing from going into that state. "The device driver for the 'WDC WD5000AACS-00GB1' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update the driver." Problem is I have never updated the driver (which I don't even know if it exists) before, and I was able to go into hibernation with no problem. Thanks |

Re: Another failing WD HDD, just bad luck?
Maybe not enough free space? I always disable hibernattion so can't comment as to that, figure if I want the machine off, I'll power it off LOL...
