scandisk will not complete
i cant start in safe mode or "nomal", only in floppy A prompt. i am trying to start pc with cdrom support. hoever, when it "does a few tests"(scandisk blue screen and many items:discriptor, file system,-about 7)it cant get past the one where it says it has to rename a file and delete half of it and give it a name as file000.chk! it is a file with gibberish caractors which are impossible! it asks to "fixit" i say yes and it asks - make undue floppy!if i say no it only makes another gibberish file to "fixit"! it looks like i cant reinstall windows! is this correct? that is i cant unless i fdisk and prepare(or whatever term they use).my os is m.e. the more i click "enter" (for "fixit")the more the files come up needing to be fixed!i am afraid i am only making things worse by clicking! once when i some how got to my cdrom windows asking me if i wanteds "safe recovery" and i answerd yes-it saids i did not have ample space on hjard disk and to delete 300 mb. i know i had 2 gb of avail. space! i was having a troganhorse startpage virus problem whenthis all started. my question: should i forget trying to make this right or should i just fdiskand reformate and kiss 12 gb of non-backed up data goodby? thanks, aileron

Have you got access to another computer that you can put the drive into as a slave and back up the files? You could format as well and then reinstall it in your original computer and then install the new Operating System.
