Re: My Book World Edition won't turn on
How do you know it has power if you don't get any lights? Just that it's "plugged in"?
You could test the AC adapter with a multimeter (on the DC side) to make sure it's actually providing power. A bad/replaceable adapter would be the simplest problem to fix. If you don't hear the disk spin up at all, and don't get any lights from the ethernet port, you're probably going to have to get a replacement (the controller is bad). But I don't know WDs procedures for that (whether or not you'd get the same disk back but with a new controller/enclosure), and I'd be afraid to send it to them. You could take the thing apart and [if only temporarily] just slave the SATA disk in a PC; you should be able to pull all the data off of it with no problem if the disk is good. They're a bit annoying to take apart, but it's do-able. I'd first test the adapter, and if it's good, call WD and ask about their policies on warranty replacement; specifically if they can replace the NAS enclosure but return the same drive to you. You don't want to send it to them if they're just going to replace the whole thing, without letting you keep your original drive. |
