Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

If I use a program to recover my files before I use the system recovery, will I be able to save the files on any computer connected to our wireless connection?

I don't really understand all this stuff about networks and everything and I don't really know how it all works.

How do I save my files on a crashed hard drive to another computer? I have wireless internet but I didn't set up any special p2p network or anything.

Re: Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

HI,
Your best bet would be to connect the drive (as a slave) directly to a working computer and then retrieve your data. Is this a laptop drive or a PC drive?

Re: Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

It is a laptop. What cord would I use to connect it?

The article I found on google reccommends the software program Selkie...

is that the best one to use?

Re: Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

You would need something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...pter&x=18&y=30

Connect the drive to the adapter and then connect the adapter to the computer.
If the drive has info on it the working Windows should "see" it.

Selkie appears to be a good program, but the FULL version will cost you a $100.00.
The two computers would also have to be connected either with a crossover cable or a wired network connection (NOT wireless).

Is this drive not booting into windows or has the drive completely failed?
What is the exact issue you are having with the drive?

Bill

Re: Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

Windows won't boot up but it turns on. I just wanted to use a program like Selkie because I don't want to mess with unscrewing parts and taking the hard drive out of the computer and all that. I'm not at that point where I am confident enough in doing that yet.

I can't say if Selkie will work or not, I have not used it.
What happens when you boot up the computer?
Does the windows screen show up?
Have you tried Safe Mode or last known good configuration?

Re: Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

Safe Mode doesn't work, last known good configuration doesn't work either.

Gateway had recovery instructions on its website but the recovery button they said to select on the screen wasn't there so I had to order a recovery disk.

I've tried logging into every kind of mode and windows is shot. System Restore doesn't even work.

Re: Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

Did you see Joten post (Post #6), it is free.

Do you get any error messages?
Have you tried a Repair Install of XP?
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

You can still try Selkie if you wish, but I have never used it. It seems like a decent program, but I am not one to shell out a $100.00 when I can use a Linux program for free.

Re: Recovering Files on a crashed hard drive

I don't have XP, I have Vista. I tried UBantu before but it wouldn't download right and I get an error message.

What is the exact model of this Gateway?
Do you have or have made a recovery DVD?
