external Hard Drive not showing in my computer

i recently bought a toshiba 3,5 inch 1 Tb its acting very strange, if i connect my hard disk in my computer USB it doesnt show in my computer, but eventually i can pick it in disc management, i then took the disk at my neighbours machine it reads fine, all machines mine and my friend machines are running windows xp proffessional, could there be anything with my computer

If you can view the drive in disk management, then right click on the drive while in disk management and click on Activate. Then go to My Computer and see if that helped.

Not showing up where exactly? My computer, or Disk Management?

No , mine is actually a WD Passport 120 GB Plug and play portable , it really sounds like an actual internal HD but quite a bit louder , i may be able to record it for you. But also as i said it has never made a sound in the 1 year i've had it. It is also very rarely used, i bought it to hold a backup of my music , witch is a little over 87 GB , So i'm quite worried. Thanks for any help in advance :)

Inside the case is an internal drive.
