using internal as external
I just bought a generic external ide case for my old internal ide Seagate and Maxtor drives I have and when I hooked it up to my laptop (Seagate drive first) it said it was installing the necessary drivers then an error message said that there was a problem during installation and the device may not work correctly. When I went to check, it doesn't show up in"my computer" or device manager. I hooked it up to my desktop and got the same messages and no detection. There were no clicking sounds on either drive and when I had them plugged internally, they work fine.
I'm very lost now and not sure if it's an issue with the case I bought(it didn't come a manual or guide or anything) or if there is some kind of software or something I need.I'm using xp sp3 on my acer laptop and dell desktop. |

Re: using internal as external
Look at the documentation for the external case, ide drives probably need to be jumpered as either master or slave. If it doesn't say, see what position the jumper is in now and try the other. Maybe even cable select. There should be a diagram on the hard drive showing which pins to cover with the jumper for the different modes.

Re: using internal as external
Thanks! The case didn't come with any kind of documentation. Just what was on the box, and I had read all of that.
It was the jumpers. I had put them in both the slave and master position but it turns out it needed to be in the cable select spot! Thanks again
