hard drive trouble

I have a Western Digital WD1600 hard drive out of a Dell desktop. The computer would not boot up --error had to do with not being able to read hard drive. I have hooked the drive up to a USB cable and run the Data lifguard test from WD. The drive passed the test but I can not get the data off of it. I get an I?O error if I try to explore the drive. Is there a program that can read the info off the drive?

Re: hard drive trouble

What test did you run? SMART - short - or long?

Re: hard drive trouble

Nexct astep would be to try partition find and mount and scan the drive. It may be a file system problem. Scan the drive ith find and mount ( http://www.findandmount.com ) and if it finds the partition, mount it as a drive letter and see if you can access the files. You can then copy your data out to another drive.

Re: hard drive trouble

Thanks, ran Findmount and it found 3 partions, mounted them and partion 1 has a size of 49MB, FAT16 file system and is not formatted, partion 2 has a size of 3GB, FAT32 file system and is not formatted. Partion 3 has a size of 156GB, NTFS. I am able to copy some of the files from partion 3, but some areas still have problems. Would running the longer scans help?

Re: hard drive trouble

I am having trouble copying the data off of the hold drive to an external hard drive. The large folders (programs, windows) start to copy and then get read error. Before trying to copy I can open the folders, after trying to copy I can not unless I restart the process by mounting the drive, Is there another wasy to copy the entire disk contents? I'd like to put all the info on the new hard drive and not have to reinstall all of the software back on the new drive.

Re: hard drive trouble

You will have to reinstall, a simple copy won't do it. You would have to do a clone of the system to get everything in the right place. You could try driveimagexml to do a disk to disk copy - it may have problems with the drive errors tho.
