EEK! Power went out, now I get "Primary hard drive failure"

Last night my power went out due to a storm and shut down my PC (Dell) and now when I turn it on all I get is a black screen with the message "Primary hard disk drive 0 failure, strike the f1 key to continue, f2 to run the setup utility"
Now i'm going to assume the hard drive is shot and I'm going to need to buy a new one, is this a correct assumption and if so can I still pull my info off the hard drive if hooked up as a slave?

Is the HD recognized corectly in BIOS? Unless it can be ID'd correctly nothing you can do at home will get the data off.

Re: Power went out, now I get "Primary hard drive failure"

What is the model on the label? What the BIOS is reporting is the default family rom name of the drive. This is incorrect, it is not reporting the correct model number. This generally indicates the drive is unable to initialize correctly by reading the SA or Service area of the disk. This is a series of tracks outside the normal user accessible data area hat contain firmware and adaptive code for the drive. Possible causes are head failure or damage/corruption to the SA area. This one will require professional recovery.
