Error occurred...
Hello
When I turn on my computer I am getting an error message on one of my two hard drives. The message reads "error occurred". The drive is on port 4 of an MSI X58 PLATINUM CROSSFIRE INTEL board. The hard drive is a Samsung HD501LJ model. I'm running windows vista64 on the machine and when I tried to use the Diag tool on start up it didn't work for me. A lot of words flashed by but it never gave me an option to scan the drive. This was going on for a couple of weeks with no performance issues and life being busy I let it go. Now Vista is acting up. All the programs crash almost immediately once opened. Thanks for the help |

Re: Error occurred...
You can download the DOS version of the disk tools from the manufacturers website to create a bootable CD. Then boot with the CD and test the HDD.
If your apps are stored on that HDD, that is likely the cause of your software issue. If not, you may have other issues as well.

Re: Error occurred...
Thanks Dogg but that is how I booted up my computer and the boot disk didn't do what it was supposed to do...I also tried it on the cmd prompt in windows with no success.
I wrote to the company that put together my system and they said that the error occurred message was a sign of a faulty hard drive and I could send it back as it was still under warranty. Since my hard drives are two 500gig SATA in a Raid 0 pattern they told me to take out the one on port 4 and return it to them. They also told me to make sure I took out the right one by testing to see if I got an error message after removing the drive. My MSI X58 Platinum board has two SATA slots on top of each other and unfortunately my ATI video card was covering the numbers so I had to guess. I guessed correctly but now is where it gets weird..... After taking out the plug for the 'error' hard drive I restarted the computer and the second hard drive is getting an error. I tried several different things and now even when both are back in their original places I am getting two error messages.... Any ideas? Is this a HD problem or a board problem? Thanks for any ideas you have. I bought the computer while home in the US but am living in Europe so I want to try and fix it on my own as I can't really get it back home. G |

Re: Error occurred...
If the drives were setup in a RAID array, I would expect you to get an array when trying to boot with only one drive installed as the array is broken. What was the error you received?

Re: Error occurred...
The error is on the initial boot up of the computer. It flashes that the RAID array is fine and then that an error occurred with both of the two hard hard drives.
When I have only one hard drive plugged in as you might expect I only get that initial boot up sequence. Windows won't load as it needs the Raid to be functional. I would reinstall windows but it seems like a lot of work if the hard drives are not working. It does not say what the error actually is. Just the slot and that an "error occurred". I have no idea if this is the HD or the board or something else. |

Re: Error occurred...
You have limited options. You can create a new bootable CD using the disk tools from the drive manufacturer ( Hard Drive Diagnostic Utilities ) or CD supplied with the drives if you purchased retail packaged drives, and test the drives. I've never tried testing drives setup in a RAID. You may need to only install one HDD at a time and/or disable RAID in the motherboard setup. Or you could simply install the HDD's one at time into another computer and test them. In which case you could install and use the Windows version of the disk tools.
