That question is a bit difficult to answer. What i can say is - if the drive is older then they can be noisy. Some drives also get nosier with age.
However - if you had the drive for a long time and it just started doing it then that could be reason for concern. Its really hard to say whats going on without actually hearing it. I have a question though: When this happens - do you experience any problems like system freezes, instabilities, errors or do you have other problems like corrupted files etc ? Some HDD manufacturers offer tools that you can download to test your drive. That might still be an option. Either way - now is the best time to back up all your important data because if your HDD dies you might lose it all without any chance to get it back.

Hi,
Sarkast gave you good advice about the drive. It is my opinion that it is probably dying if it does what you said.
