green light on computer will not turn on

I'm currently using a custom computer that i got around 7 years ago. It is a netzoa power intel inside pentinum 4 computer. I don't know much else about it because i'm not very into computers and i just use it for things such as facebook and homework. from what i knew before it had about 2.89 ghz and i think 528 ram. now that i've told you about my computer, allow me to inform you about my problem.

i was just using the computer for normal things, i was on youtube watching some videos and on facebook/aim. i was moving my mouse around and suddenly it stopped. i tried alt+tab+delete, and nothing happened. i waited for about 5 minutes and tried again, with no success. i proceeded to reach to the back of the computer and turn the power switch (not the button). i think this is where the problem came. i flipped it off and then back on almost immediately, and the computer restarted somehow. everything seemed to go accordingly, the fans were spinning and the wireless keyboard receptor lights came on as the usually do when i turn on the computer. however, the monitor didn't turn on. so i switched off on the back and turned it back on using the button, and i noticed that in the front there are 2 lights (red/green) and only the red one was on. i think thats the main problem. i have turned off the back again, made sure everything was plugged in securely, and tried turning the computer back on multiple times. i don't know what else to do.

p.s.: i'm sorry if i'm doing anything wrong. i wasn't sure which section to post this in and i thought maybe it was a hardware problem. if not, please move this accordingly. also i did read the thread about (read this before posting) and i think i have told you everything i know. i would really, really appreciate some help!

Re: green light on computer will not turn on

I could be wrong, but its not a good idea to flip the switch on the back of the PC (power supply), its best to use the ON/OFF button in front of the computer. Staring from the begining of your post, it sounds like originally your computer froze up, which happens sometimes. Then as far as you switching off the power through the back and back on, I would of switched it off, waited a couple of minutes, and then turned it back on.

Now, with the green light not coming on, its hard to tell what the problem could be without knowing what kidn of motherboard is inside the computer. You can download CPUID (www.cpuid.com), this utility will give you more info as to what motherboard you have (model number). you can then post this info back on here and we can continue trying to figure out what the problem could be.

Just curious, is this the only problem now? That the green light doesnt come on? Just from knowledge, there could be one or two lights in front of the case, one could be the HD activity light, and the other, as you mentioned, the main power light. The green light youre referring to, I'm going to assume is the HD activity light, but I could be wrong. If it is infact that, then thats not really a big issue, but I could understand your frsutration as to why all of a sudden is not coming on.

Hope this helps...

I agree, using the PSU switch is never a good idea. Suddenly stopping the power to the PC can cause all kinds of problems.

Now on to the problem. You mention two lights, a red and a green. Which of these is the HD and which is the power?

Re: green light on computer will not turn on

hey guys thanks for the replies. well to start off the green light was the power light i believe. and what happened was when i flipped the back switch on and off too quickly, the motherboard and the power supply somehow lost its connection or something, so the cost for the replacements would be almost 300 dollars. i figured i'll just throw it away because the computer was 7 years old anyway. thanks for your help though!
