Hard drive trips power supply

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 100 gig pata133. Unfortunately it holds...or held...pictures of my late mother which were some of the few that weren't backed up. When drive is connected and computer powered up it trips the power supply which then must be reset with ps switch. I have a second drive in the computer which works ok as long as the Maxtor is disconnected.

What are the chances of this being a PCB failure? I don't see any physical damage on the top of the board but guess something is shorted in order to trip ps.

Thanks for your help. I'm in the process of specing a new computer with RAID to cover my own stupidity. I'd sure like to retrieve those pictures off this drive, though.

Re: Hard drive trips power supply

Real good posibility, what is the actual model number of the drive, and can you post clear closeup pics of the component side of hte circuit board.

Re: Hard drive trips power supply

Thanks for the replies. To answer your Q's:

With hard drive installed, when I power up the computer the fans rotate 1/4 turn then all power turns off. When I remove this drive the computer powers up fine (after cycling psu switch off and on.)

Here is the info on the drive...

Maxtor Diamondmax 10
Model 6L100PO
100 GB PATA 133
sn: L251DQG
Code BAJ4g20
LBA: 195813072
Mfg Date 20 Apr 2006
zbcrkafn c1glb 14046l1jsz (sticker with bar code on component side of drive case)
http://picasaweb.google.com/skypoke1...72244767834178 picture of hard drive. If this shot isn't usable please let me know and I'll break out a macro lens. Once again, thanks for the help.

Chuck

Re: Hard drive trips power supply

If you can get a little better shot, the area of interest is the upper left quarter in the pic you shot, the area behind the power connector.

Re: Hard drive trips power supply-new pictures posted

Hey Raptor,

Finally located my macro lens and I've posted a couple detailed shots. I'd sure appreciate it if you'd take a look and let me know if they have the info you need. If not, I'll be happy to shoot and post more. Since the focal length of the macro is so short, if you could describe the component you need in focus I'll know what to shoot.

Thanks, Chuck

Re: Hard drive trips power supply

CR201 cr202, there is anoother Diode in that same area with a 73 ion the component and the smooth chip itself. Waht we're looking for on those components is any sign of scorching/croacking. The three diodes Cr201,202 and the other one should all be checked with a Multimeter set to diode check. They should be open in one direction, shrt in the other. If they are shorted both directions, then we have found the culprit. The smooth chip is the motor control chip for the spindle motor.

Just a reminder - RAID is not designed to replace backups. Raids only purpose is to keep a machine running if one drive physically fails. We still end up doing a lot of RAID data recoveries, and they are anything but cheap, Also remember RAID0 has NO redundancy, lose one drive and all data is gone. Raid1 is the safest then RAID5...

Re: Hard drive trips power supply

CR201 CR202 each read open in each direction. The one with the 73 on it reads shorted in one direction, 650 ohms in the other. I don't see any signs of scorching which makes the open diodes seem odd. I wonder if I'm testing them correctly...not sure which scale I should be on but none of em show zero and open like I'd expect. I'm using el cheap digi meter.

I hear you about the RAID. Too soon old and too late wise.

I wonder about the possiblity of finding a drive board that would swap out?

Re: Hard drive trips power supply

Hmmm does the meter have a diode check setting? often teh difference on the forward reverse bias is very tight on some of these diodes. The diode check position will have something tht looks like this ->| arrowhead to vertical bar. The diodes being open would not present a problem, these components normally burn shorted in the wrong direction. They are a clamping diode, when voltage exceeds their threshhold level, they conduct to shunt the voltage direct to ground. When they fail, they fail shorted. Since open is their normal state, if they burned open then the drive should spin up.
Diamondmax 10 PCB swap - per Maxtor....
There is a GTLA number on the model (next tot he barcode on the bottom of the drive). Format 1Y222J2223322 1,2,and3 stand for numbers, Y and J are for letters. The number 1 and 3 as well as the letter Y need to be identical to be able to replace the PCB on these drives.
This model has a reasonable chance for success.
