[SOLVED] Hard Drive Crash/ Extra Programs/ Lost Hard Drive Space/ Refusing Programs t
Well, a few weeks ago my hard drive crashed.
To sort it out, I just simply reformatted my computer to eliminate all problems; get rid of any viruses or spyware etc. After re-installing Windows XP I found several problems; couldn't update, connect to the internet, install drivers. After, I sent it to my friend who helped fix the computer. I got my computer working, but still some errors remained. I found that some programs which I never had before were installed, and was wondering if they were necessary. Programs like Windows Live Messenger still refused to work, and after spending hours fixing settings it still wouldn't work. After this, I found in Properties under My Computer, my hard drive said it was a total of 120 GB. My Hard Drive is 320 GB. When I first installed windows, my hard drive was partioned, and it was my C drive with about 120 GB on it which crashed. Is that way I still have half a drive? How could I lose over half the space on the drive, and also do you have any solutions to my extra programs such as: - Vtunes 6.7 - Windows Search 4.0 (I know this is to search through the registry but it was never showing in the taskbar in the bottom right corner or in the Program Listings in Add/Remove Programs. Is their a need for the latest version of it anyway?) - Windows PowerShell 1.0 Are they neccessary? Also, Windows Live Messenger comes up with various errors. I got passed all the errors, but once I sign in, I see my contacts, but if I try double clicking on one to talk to, or just click on the window itself it goes white and freezes. I haven't been able to find a solution to this. Anyone able to help? |

The other possibility is the base install of XP didn't have at least SP1 in the installation files. XP will only recognize up to 127 GB unless a service pack is slipstreamed into the installation disk when the OS is setup.

Re: Hard Drive Crash/ Extra Programs/ Lost Hard Drive Space/ Refusing Programs to Wor
That could be the reason,
when I installed XP, It was the original first disk, so it didn't have a SP on it? That's why I wasn't allowed to install or update programs, and why I sent it to my friend to fix. Does that sound right? |

It should allow you to install unless the program you were installing required a specific service pack level and most times the installer will tell you what level it requires if it fails. It would explain the restriction in size though

Re: Hard Drive Crash/ Extra Programs/ Lost Hard Drive Space/ Refusing Programs to Wor
you can keep your windows disk up to date by slipstreaming the the sp in and then using the slipstreamed disk as your normal disk
