Cry WD harddrive dead?

As of yesterday, my harddrive simply wouldn't be picked up on my computer. The on-light still turns on and my computer still picks up the harddrive in device manager, but it is just called "WD", and it will not give me any info on the harddrive.

The WD P/N is WD3200E1MSBK-00
The S/N is WXE908JP8160

If you need any additional info, i will be happy to supply it.

I would really like to recover the stuff of this harddisk as I have no backups of the stuff on the drive.

Re: WD harddrive dead?

it sounds a bit like the "Western Digital laptop hard drive with stuck spindle trying to spin up with siren" but not quite. I will see if i can find a microphone and post a recording of it. It does sound alot like a little siren inside the drive.

Re: WD harddrive dead?

When you plug an External drive like this one is (elements) you will get a tone to tell you that you have just plugged in a Usb Powered device.
Does it show up in Disc Management?
If it does is there a letter assigned to the drive?

Re: WD harddrive dead?

Next step is to get the HD oput of the external enclosure and connected directly to a port on a desktop. See if it is identified correctly by model number.

Re: WD harddrive dead?

Externals are internal drives in enclosures. There's a hard drive in there.

There should be screws holding it together

Re: WD harddrive dead?

My elements drive has 4 screws on the bottom of the drive.
If it has Rubber Boots on the end remove them and see if the screws are hidden underneath.

Re: WD harddrive dead?

They do come apart. Have a look at THIS

It's not the same as yours but you can see the type of problems you may encounter
