WD 320GB Essential Edition external Hard Drive

I tried to set-up my WD 320GB External Hard Drive, but my XP Professional will Not Recognise it, nor post it to My Computer. I'm confused about this. I Can't Access the Programs on it, and I do have More to Download.
What should I do? and how can I FIX this problem

If it came packaged with any software, install it.
