Computers do not recognise external USB hard dirve

So when I plug in my EHD it comes up with a message USB device not recognized and the tells me that it malfunctioned and windows cannot recognise it. I have a 1.5 terabite hard drive and only used it a few times. I have tried with Dell, Toshiba and compaq with windows 200, Xp and Vista any Idea I have stuff I need on this hard drive and cannot loose for work.
Any help is appriciated

OK first thing to do is get the drive out of the enclosure and mount it internally to a desktop. need to determine if it is the drive, the enclosure, or the filesystem

Getting it out of the enclosure is going to depend on what enclosure you actually have. That is just a case of looking for screws ( maybe behind rubber feet, stickers etc ) or looking for the appropriate seams or release tabs. Once you have the drive out and we know what the actual interface is we can point you to a tutorial for installing.

The acyual drive is identical to an internal drive. Is it IDE or SATA if you are not sure, google the model number of the drive and it will tell you which interface it is, and probably give you installation instructions in the manual. If it is seagate the model will be ST####### - WD will be WD######-### or something like that format.
