moving hard drive from one computer to another
I've reformatted & setup drives before..but i've never set one up on one computer, then removed the drive to a 2nd computer hoping it will work.
Should it work? I'm asking because I've done this, but the drive is not booting up in the new (2nd) computer. I can't figure out why it's not working...I can see that the drive is detected in the bios (the only thing that might be unusual is that it comes up as the secondary master- primary master & primary slave are both going to Cd roms..). It goes through the initial memory check, then it displays a bunch of info like pci devices & their irq number...but it hangs there with a cursor blinking (no error messages). At one point, i did get a message saying ECSD update successful..not %100 what that means). Any ideas? Shouldn't i be able to set it up on one computer then transfer it to another? The hard drive is an IDE drive...the computer i used to set it up is an HP business computer (P4 2.1 Ghz)..the 2nd comp is a generic built computer (P3 933Mhz). Any help appreciated. Thanks. Re: moving hard drive from one computer to another
You can't JUST move it from one computer to another if it contains the operating system. When you install windows it creates the hardware abstraction layer based on the system it is installed on. If you move the drive to a second computer, you will have do a repair install using the install disk. This will recreate the HAL. After that it should work fine.

~Also, Can i download these motherboard/other device drivers? i thought windows XP just does that for you. ~Ive already spent the last 2 days putting in windows updates and installing winXP SP3. Ill have to re-do it all if i put in a second hard drive? ~I dont want to boot from the second drive im putting in. I already have a main drive i can boot from i just want this hard drive to be just a second one. But, it has winXP Pro installed on it what will happen to the second winXP and will it screw things up? And is there a way to remove the second winXP? Ill be fine with the WinXP home installed on the HDD the computer came with its just going to be a home computer. Last edited by goku262002; 07-06-2009 at 08:27 AM. |

Re: moving hard drive from one computer to another
NO OS needed on the second drive, it shouldn't even see the windows install, just install the drive and format it NTFS and you will have a nice clean drive to work with for storing data...

Re: moving hard drive from one computer to another
You certainly can, just make sure if it is IDE the jumpers are set corrctly and your boot order in BIOS is set correctly. You may need to take ownership of the files and folders you want to move since they were created on the old OS, and even if you duplicate username and password, the SID that the OS uses to set security will always b different. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Re: moving hard drive from one computer to another
Ownership?! what? i never had to "take ownership" of files before i just usually copy/paste them. but ive only done this once before.
I tried plugging in the harddrive and booting the computer up. it didnt show up as new hardware or wasnt detected at all. what did i do wrong? Yes the harddrive is IDE/PATA. ive never had to mess around with jumper pins before so i just usually leave them alone. i did make sure that the power connector and the cable connector were in there tight. Re: moving hard drive from one computer to another
If there are multiple drives on the same cable then you will need to se the jumpers appropriately to either master/slave or both cable select ( forcing master slave is preferred ) both drives on the cable must be cable select or one master and one slave. If the drive you are copying from is formatted fat32, then it is not an issue, if formatted NTFS then ownership will be a problem copying from the foreign drive. It sounds more like you have a jumper issue since the drive wasn't connected. Can you fell the drive spin up?
