Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
Several days after this: FastFat New Hardware Wizard
up until today.... Last night all i remember doing is installing a game and I played it for a little while (street fighter 4). Then I shut it down properly. When I got up this morning, I was greeted with a black screen with a message saying that the computer has nothing to boot up. I looked in the bios to view the location where it was installed, and it doesnt have a description. Sea Tools told me that the long DST had failed but the others passed. I hooked it up to another computer through usb and the drive doesnt even show up at all. (cant even access my data). I put my 80gb seagate drive in to test it out and that works. This hdd that suddenly wouldnt be recognized is a 1tb seagate hdd. So I look inside Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management (windows on this other cpu) and it has the 1tb seagate drive named seagate D:. The file system on it suddenly says CDFS instead of NTFS. The status says healthy. The capacity shows 624mb with 0 free space when it is a 1tb hdd. The original name that the 1tb hdd had is gone. How in the world could this have happened suddenly and how can I fix this? Also, do you think that the fixboot cmd prompt can fix this? (P.S. Thanks in advance) Last edited by shinra358; 07-02-2009 at 11:40 AM. |

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
What is the model number of the drive. If it is in the 7200.11 family check on Seagate's site, they have a tool to check the drive serial number and see if it is affected by a known firmware bug. If it is listed as possibly affected then call Seagate support. If it is not 7200.11 or not affected, then connect it directly to the ports of the second PC ( not using USB ) and see if BIOS recognizes the drive correctly.

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
For when I said a particular test came back as failed above, I thought that it was the drive that i was talking about, but that was just the drive of the other compuer. My mistake. The other stuff I said was for the problematic hdd though.
Ok, the model number is ST310005N1A1AS barracuda internal hard drive upgrade kit. As of now, seatools cant read it. all the info is blank. Same with that tool. It sounds normal and it is not hot. Im going to install it on the inside real quick to see if i get anything different.....brb |

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
OK next step is to check on seagates site for the 7200.11 firmware checker, just enter the serial number of the drive and it will tell you if it might be affected.

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
For some reason, the edit button disappears after a certain amount of time....
Sadly, I burned the correct firmware and even that couldnt identify the drive. It said 0 devices found and then it shut the computer off -_- |

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
Once the drive is bricked, it can't be upgraded without a trip back to Seagate, or at least to a Pro Recovery shop, takes special hardware to be able to restore the disk to an operational status so it can be flashed. Did you check the serial? SD15 is the vesion with issues, but not all drives are subject to the bug, has to do with production/testing methods used on certain production lines during a specific time.

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
Yeah, the serial is SD15. I got a 5 year warranty on it and i got it several months ago. Probably around Nov or Dec of '08. So you're saying that seagate can send me a new hdd with all my stuff still on it if i send them this drive?

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
You have to contact Seagate. IF the drive is listed as affected they will have you return it for evaluation. IF the problem is caused by the firmware edition then they will reset the drive so it is operational and apply the flash and return your current drive with data intact. If it is NOT caused by the firmware bug, then they will replace the drive under warranty, and you will NOT get your data back, or they will charge you the standard recovery cost to get your data. The only way they are doing free recovery is if the actual evaluated cause of the failure is the firmware issue. Any other failure is standard warranty, which no drive manufacturer will recover your data under warranty, all they do is warranty the drive.

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
Aight, talked to them. And since it was about the firmware, they gonna fix it and hopefully send the same one back with the data on it. Since Im recovering data, I sent it to a company that works with them. All I can do is pray now -_t

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
Yes it is i365. Hopefully when they flash it, it will work. Cuz if not, then its not covered under warranty and theyll have to do an opening of it to be put on another one which they said would cost 800 bucks 0_o

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
Actually that is a great price for a drive that size! Most recovery shops would twice that or more because the new Seagate's are a pain in the neck to work on LOL. Guess that's the difference with the manufacturer owning a recovery company!

Re: Computer suddenly cannot access HDD
I had asked Geek Squad before I set up things with i365. Geek Squad's company was $500.
Since the drive was "bricked" could the failed firmware attempt on my part, before i sent it off, have erased the data? I mean bricked means NOTHING can get in it to do such a thing right? I dunno, something seemed odd... |
