Simpletech 500 GB External HD Problem
I'm having a problem with my Simpletech 500 GB External Hard Drive. A few days ago I was using it and it was working fine, but then I accidentally pulled on the cord and it dropped a few inches from the bottem of my desk to the floor while it was on. Now it has stopped working. When I turn the HD on, the red power light comes on and the blue lights on top will also come on. But right away there are a series of tones that will last a few seconds then nothing happens. The power light is still on, but the blue lights are no longer on.
Could someone please help me? I have irreplaceable documents and pictures on this HD. |

Re: Simpletech 500 GB External HD Problem
Most of the simple tech drives I've worked on had Seagate or maxtor drives inside, not to say they all do, but generally tones are indicative of physical problems, after a drop, usually spindle issues, if the drive was spinning when it hit, it is probably a bent, seized spindle. This would require pro recovery in a clean room - probably starting about $1200 and up USD. Unfortunately this is not something you can do at home. Check out the sounds here, and see if any are like yours. Don't limit it just to Seagate and Maxtor because you can't be sure till you open the case what is inside. http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
