SATA compatibility issues..
Hey everyone, quick question that I need to verify. I have a 2.5 laptop SATA HDD that's not working and reading in anything, and I think it's dead. My question is, should you ever, need and drivers or firmware, when you are hooking up a basic IDE or SATA HDD, with a USB converter to a another desktop machine? I plug it in, and get nothing, and on a diagnostic tool I have, it has question marks and acts like nothing is there, 0.00K. Thanks.

Re: SATA compatibility issues..
No drivers should be needed, is the adapter separately powered? Can you connect it to SATA ports on a desktop to see if it is identified in BIOS? What is the make and model number of the disk... I'm going to guess Seagate momentus family of drives...

Re: SATA compatibility issues..
Yeah, it's just a basic stand alone IDE/SATA to USB converter. I haven't put it in my PC yet, but I am assuming the same result. It's a Fujitsu, which are mostly problematic in my experience anyway.

Re: SATA compatibility issues..
It did work when I plugged it in directly. I still have to find install drivers to package with the XP install disc, awesome.... For the future though, if a drive gets nothing, when hooking up directly and USB, it's pretty much done right?

Re: SATA compatibility issues..
The USB interface is about useless for troubleshooting - it doesn't pass some of the low level commands and protocols that are needed... if it's not found in BIOS, then you still eeed to verify the configuration. DR pros can recover from a lot of serious failures to get the data, but nothing much you can do at home if not identified....
